Tim's Rice Museum Travelogue
Rice Museum is in Alor Setar, Kedah. The Rice Museum consists of two main levels and a top portion accessible by a spiral staircase. You are given a thorough explanation of anything involved with rice inside. Some are simply trivia, like songs dedicated to rice can be heard.
There are several galleries with panoramic murals. What you find here is a massive circular mural measuring 103 metres in circumference, and 8 metres in height. You enter this gallery from the middle, and immediately the scene of the surrounding Gunung Keriang region unfolds around you.
The Rice Museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm. On Fridays it observes a 12.30-2.30pm recess. Admission is RM3 for adults and RM1 for children. This museum can be one of the stops in an AsiaExplorers trip through Kedah.
Bukit Hijau Recreational Forest
Bukit Hijau Recreational Forest, or Hutan Lipur Bukit Hijau, it is as known as a popular picnic destination especially for people living in southern Kedah and Penang. Bukit Hijau, is famous for the seven-level cascading waterfalls.Cement walkway and steps help visitors climb the hill side, although personally, I prefer that the forest is left in a more pristine state. Photography enthusiasts should be delighted by the sight of the waterfall as well as its surrounding greenery.
You can play waters around Bukit Hijau. However, like all waterfalls, please be aware that the current can be dangerous. A victim of drowning being carried out in Bukit Hijau happened before. It doesn't mean that you should stay away from Bukit Hijau - lots of people have visited it without any incidents. Yes, accidents can happen anywhere, at waterfalls or the sea or mountains, so always be careful.
The Menara of Alor Star
The Menara Alor Star was destroyed and rebuilt a few times. It was brought down by the Bugis invasion of 1770, and the same happened in the Siamese invasion in 1821. The present structure dates back to 1893, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah.Inside the building u can go to the top floor for watching the whole Alor Setar. There are also some restaurant up there for people to view a beautiful scence at night while there are having dinner. The Menara Alor Star was the venue of a lavish wedding ceremonies for the Sultan's fifth eldest sons and daughters. The extravagant affair lasted three months, from June to September, and almost bankrupted the state. It is a nice place and it is free for entering.
